Pro Tips by Dave Scinocca, CPGA Professional

First Shots OF The Year
The start of the golf season is just around the corner. Too often I see people rushing to the driving range and without any warm up swings pulling out their drivers for the first shots of the year. This can lead to developing some bad habits early on and could also cause you to pull or injure some muscles that have not seen action for several months.

The proper way to warm up for the season is to gradually work up to full swings, progressing from wedge shots, to long irons and then finally into the woods.

I like to start every session with some simple stretches to loosen up my back, arms and legs. I will then make several slow golf swings before hitting any balls. When I feel that I am warmed up and have most of the kinks out, I will begin with the highest lofted club that I have in my set and begin hitting short shots.

Slowly increase the length and power of your swing until you are hitting full shots. Continue hitting 5 - 10 balls before switching clubs. You can now continue hitting full shots with half of your irons in your set.

Finally, more to your woods, starting again with the highest lofted one that you carry. Start with a 5 or 7 wood and then progress to the Driver using the same process as you did for the irons.
